Music students visit the Barbican for London Symphony Orchestra
Back
On March 11th, 2026, our students stepped out of the classroom and into the world-class acoustics of the Barbican Hall for an unforgettable encounter with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO).
The visit centred on a special Key Stage 3 performance titled "The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra." Led by expert Rachel Leach, the concert was designed to pull back the curtain on the mechanics of a professional symphony. Students were given a front-row seat to the intricate layers of sound that define the LSO, exploring how individual sections, from the thunderous percussion to the delicate woodwinds, unite to create a powerful musical narrative.
Beyond the music itself, the trip offered a glimpse into one of London’s most iconic brutalist landmarks. For many, it was a first-time experience of the Barbican’s unique atmosphere, providing a deeper understanding of the city's rich cultural landscape. Whether they were aspiring musicians or first-time listeners, the students returned with a newfound appreciation for the scale, discipline, and sheer emotion of live orchestral performance.
